Nature’s Gift – Virgin Coconut Oil

Our Virgin Coconut Oil is made from premium quality coconuts that are cold-processed to retain their nutrients.

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is extracted from fresh coconut milk obtained from mature kernel (12 months old from pollination) of coconut by mechanical or natural means, with or without the application of heat, which does not lead to alteration of the nature of the oil. VCO can be consumed in its natural state without the need for further processing. Hence, VCO does not undergo chemical refining, bleaching or deodorizing. Virgin coconut oil is colorless, free of sediment and has natural fresh coconut scent. It is free from rancid odor or taste. Virgin coconut oil consists mainly of medium chain fatty acids. The fatty acids in virgin coconut oil are distinct from animal fats which mainly consist of long chain saturated fatty acids.

Virgin coconut oil consists mainly of medium chain fatty acids. The most important medium chain fatty acid found in VCO is lauric acid. It constitutes 48 % of VCO. Lauric acid possess powerful anti microbial properties capable of destroying disease causing bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. Researches show that the presence of medium chain fatty acids in mother’s milk is the primary ingredient that protects new born infants from infections for the first few months of their life, while their immune system is still developing.

The Goodness of our Coconuts

Our coconuts come from an island village – R-Block – that lies along the Vembanad Lake. R-Block is in the Kuttanad region, a water tourism destination famed as the Rice bowl of Kerala. The Vembanad Lake and surrounding villages are home to many freshwater fish, marine fish, tropical flora and migratory birds like the Siberian Crane.

The beautiful waterways fringed by coconut palm groves and paddy fields lend a rustic charm to this region. These lakeside villages are connected by serpentine canals. R-Block and many other island villages in this region had been reclaimed from the Vembanad Lake and are protected by dikes akin to those in Holland. Hence farming in this village is unique as it belongs to an area which has the lowest altitude in India. It is one of the few places in the world where farming is done 1.2 to 3.0 meters (4 to 10 ft) below the sea level.

The indigenous system of bio-saline farming has made FAO declared the Kuttanad Farming System as Globally Important Agriculture Heritage Systems (GIAHS). Kuttanad has also been declared as one of the Ramsar (international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands) sites. The Vembanadu – Kol wetlands is one of largest Ramsar sites on the southwestern coast of India as per the guidelines of the Ramsar Convention of 1971. It was declared as a Ramsar site of international importance in 2002.
