Earth builder camp for teenagers started at Plantrich Organic Experience Centre. Participants enjoyed the fun-wrapped training programme which taught them about organic farming and cycling.
The camp was inaugurated by the planting of pepper vines in grow bags by all participants. The guests to too joined in planting pepper wines. Molly Paul, the organic expert explained the importance of pepper wine planting and its connection with Thiruvathira njattuvela period. However, due to climate change, many njattuvela seasons too have changed. Ideally, pepper wines should be planted before the monsoon. So today is auspicious for planting pepper. The chief guest of the day Ms Sisy Bobby, President of Vijayapuram Panchayat praised the environmental protection and green activities of the organisers. Mr Joji C John, Vice President Manarcadu Grama Panchayat, Mr Prasad Abraham, Sub Inspector of Police, Manarcadu, Mr Rajesh, Assistant Sub Inspector of Police, Mr Thampan, Member, Vijayapuram Panchayat graced the occasion with their presence. Master trainers organic expert Mr BiIjumon Kurian, the green tour expert Mr. Sunil k George, Rotary East Secretary Rtn Regi K Abraham and Mrs Sheena Susan Varghese, Director, Plantrich addressed the gathering.
Ice break was fun and gave the opportunity for team building to participants.
The first assignment was the filling of grow bag for cultivation. Three teams started mixing of Coir pith and soil and later added peat soil and organic manure in 1 is to 1 ratio. Many of the children had never experienced such planting and they made a promise that they would start a kitchen garden in their home.
Participants were given delicious organic food which was prepared in the Plantrich kitchen. Mrs Deepa R. explained the health benefits of a healthy breakfast and special organic food. The dishes, made with from organic rice and vegetables from Plantrich garden and farmlands, were Amaranth Dosa and a breakfast cereal made with coconut sugar, desiccated coconut, cashew nuts and dried fruits. Coffee brewed in the Plantrich coffee lab too was served. The health benefits of coffee were explained by the dietician.
The cycling workshop by Mr Akash, national cyclist, was an amazing experience for the participants. The 22-year boy cycles 60 km daily and over the weekend this goes to 200 km. He explained the benefits of cycling to the participants. Participants were trained how to cycle properly, about safety measures and repair and maintenance of cycles. This was a first-time experience for many.
The feedback session and group exercises really motivated the participants creating a successful camp. We are sure that every earth builder who attended this camp will do us proud by creating a green future for our earth!
