The Jackfruit Journey Begins

We appreciate that jackfruit is a natural, plant-based alternative to meat. It’s even hailed as the food crop of the future, and rightly so. But have you ever wondered where jackfruit comes from? Jack trees thrive in the regions near the equator that boast of tropical climates. It is said that jack trees are originally native to India. They are now cultivated in other areas of South East Asia including The Philippines. Africa and South America are also home to this evergreen tree.

The Plantrich team’s jackfruit journey starts from a small village in Idukki in Kerala, specifically Idinjamala. Organic farming is a way of life here as the climate and soil are immensely suitable to natural vegetation. Even heavy monsoons are not a deterrent to wild jackfruit cultivation. Families can earn generously from jackfruit trees, right from their backyard. We can hence ensure complete farm to fork traceability of the lip-smacking jackfruit that you relish.

A chance meeting with Wild Jack three years ago, kickstarted our love affair with jackfruit. Itsversatility propelled us to explore a sustainable way to import it into Europe. Two years into the venture, we were encouraged by seeing people’s tremendous positive reactions to Jack. Taking it one step further, we teamed with Lyfesutra, Hamburg toseamlesslyconsolidate our supply chain in Germany. The fact thatIdinjamalawild jackfruit is a non- invasive crop with weather resilientproperties helped us zero in on this wholesome variety. During storms and floods, the sturdiness of the jack tree and itsrobust root network help break the wind flow and prevent soil erosion. To further our commitment to sustainable development goals, we are also actively exploring partnership opportunities globally.

A well-known ingredient in many Asian cuisines, jackfruit is the world’s largest known fruit, weighing up to 25 kilograms.Jackfruit’s nutritional benefits cannot be emphasized enough, it beingrich in fibre, magnesium, zinc, potassium, and a variety of vitamins. Receiving and Cutting

Jackfruit Retort Processing Steps

  1. Receiving and Cutting
Collect tender jack from organic certified farmers and slice the tender jackfruit into small even pieces (two to three centimeters). Standard purchase specifications are stringently adhered to at the Receiving area
  1. Blanching
The sliced tender jackfruit is blanched to protect its quality, color, and nutritional value. Scalding in boiling water for a brief time interval and being plunged into iced water is the fail-safe method for the slices to be cooked just right. Temperature control is of paramount importance at this step.
  2. Retort Pouch Filling
Fill 200 grams of blanched jack fruit into the retort pouch. This is followed by vacuum sealing. All staff are attired in protective and hygienic gear, throughout the handling of raw material and finished product
  3. Retorting
By maintaining the temperature at 121-degree celsius for seven minutes, the sterilization process (retorting)is carried out. Our high-quality retort pouches maintain seal integrity with excellent barrier properties.
  4. Cooling and Packing
After retorting, the pouches are allowed to cool under room temperature and sent for packing. Retorted jack is packed in attractive space-saving duplex boxes. They are made shipment-ready by being stacked uniformly in sturdy containers.
