Cloves aka Syzygium aromaticum are the flower buds of the clove tree, used to season pot roasts, add flavour to hot beverages and bring spicy warmth to cookies and cakes, apart from having immense medicinal properties. Plantrich Organic Cloves are the air-dried unopened flower buds obtained from evergreen clove tree of a height of 10-12 metres. Clove clusters are plucked by hand when the buds are fully developed with a pink flush and then dried over several days in the sun. The trees that start flowering in about seven years of planting continue to produce flower buds for 80 or more years. The trees begin to yield from 7-8 years after planting. The stage of harvest of flower buds determines the quality of Plantrich’s organic-certified cloves.
After harvest, the clove buds and stems are piled separately for drying immediately separating from the clusters. The traditional method is sun-drying on mats in thin layers to ensure uniform colour and to prevent mould formation. In sunny weather, drying is completed in 4-5 days. The dried bright brown Plantrich Organic Cloves are sorted, bagged and stored for supply and export.
